This DIY is so simple and fun. I am still in love with (and not at all sick of) all the nature inspired design trends so when I saw the Birch Candle from Pottery Barn I got to thinking about how I could use some faux woodgrain contact paper I have on hand from past craft projects. Initially I just wrapped the paper around the candle but then Mollika and I got all crazy-like and starting making some simple silhouettes by printing images to create our own stencils. The bird on the branch that Mollika made is my favorite! I am thinking maybe some deer and fox silhouettes are next? A pine tree would be perfect for the holiday season as well.
Supplies
Candles (We used Ikea's Tindra series. They sell a five pack of varying sizes in the stores that work great.)
Scissors
X-acto knife if you are getting really detailed
Woodgrain Contact paper with adhesive backing (aka shelf paper)
Your imagination
- Print out an image you fancy or sketch your own on a piece of paper.
- Cut out the image and use it to trace directly onto the contact paper.
- Cut the contact paper image. Peel and apply directly to candle.
- Light the candle and enjoy the ambiance.
- Done.
Happy crafting!

Fantastic! Great project. I just had a thought.. I'm not familiar with contaact paper, but could you potentially cut an 8.5 x 11 sheet, throw it in the printer so that it prints on the back, and print right onto it? That might skip a step! These are so cute, I have to go get some wooden contact paper now......
ReplyDeleteI love it. Makes me want to be craftsy. This sounds like even I could do it. Maybe you will see posting of our candles this year!

ReplyDeletebeautiful!
ReplyDeletelooks awesome! but will the contact paper light on fire eventually?
ReplyDeleteI actually just got to the point where the wax was surpassing the contact paper (because I forgot about it...eek!) but it did not catch on fire. It just kinda shrivled up a little.
